The Singularity of Obsession

When collecting crosses the threshold into mania, museums are born. These institutions are testaments to individuals who found profound meaning in the intensely mundane.

Museum of Bad Art (MOBA)

Boston, MALocation
800+Pieces
FreeAdmission

Dedicated to "art too bad to be ignored." The collection features works rescued from thrift stores and trash cans. The curation applies serious academic critique to works of staggering ineptitude.

Curatorial Standards

MOBA does not accept deliberately bad kitsch. Works must be sincere attempts at art that have gone fundamentally wrong in execution, perspective, or concept.

The Avanos Hair Museum

CappadociaLocation
16,000+Locks of Hair
CaveSetting

Situated in a subterranean cave beneath a pottery shop in Turkey, this museum consists entirely of locks of hair from female visitors worldwide, pinned to the walls and ceiling with their names and addresses.

Began in 1979 when a potter's friend departed Avanos and left him a lock of hair as a memento. Subsequent female visitors heard the story and began leaving their own.

Twice a year, a winning lock of hair is drawn, and the owner is invited back to Cappadocia for an all-expenses-paid workshop in traditional pottery.
